Geocaching

23/04/2013  We had been contemplating going on a bike ride from New Town into the city to collect the HBT series and today was it. It was school holidays and also close to lunch time, so the bike track has a lot of muggles, including council and services maintenance workers. HBT Under the Bridge A cyclist stopped to ask what we doing, and was told the answer; well what else can you say? HBT Wall Spent a lot of time looking whilst heading to town and even looked at objects that were eventually found to match the hiding cover. What threw us was the supposed 'give away' sign, because we saw what could be it and searched there, then gave up and continued on our way. However on the return ride we spotted what at first looked to be the sign, then perhaps wasn't as it was so faint. But it was and then the remainder of the hint items were revealed. HBT Stormy Welcome At last an easy find for the day. HBT Crossing Sue soon spotted this one. Actually the photo in the log on 1 A...

Thursday  4 April 2013  We had planned to go for a walk on the mountain, but delays forced a rethink and a walk around Hobart past a few caches was the outcome. Not unexpectedly, muggles were everywhere. AC/DC: Who made who We discovered the likely hiding spot which matched the hint, but a search did not locate the container. Even stretching in as far the Peter's arm would allow failed to come up with anything. Ghost Tour of Hobart #4 Penitentiary Chapel As luck would have it a tour was just taking place right at the GZ, so we had to wait about looking at the historic features. There was also building works going on a few metres away in the emergency services building. Hobart Rivulet : Do Not Enter This took a lot of searching. We discovered the spot matching a recent log entry, but didn't spy the container. In fact we had just about given up, especially with muggles standing close by, when we decided to look closer at a likely spot we hadn't checked. Peter ended up jam...

Friday 22 March 2013 With New Town bay #4 back on line we decided to do a loop walk through Lutana to Prince of Wales Bay and back via Moonah. A 7 kilometre walk. Lutana is an area we hadn't walked through before and we got a surprise to find a pocket of houses all with that rough cement rendering that was used 50 years ago or more. Some were single story and others double and were probably built by the zinc works for employees. New Town Bay #4 After learning this was back online we went to complete the series. Took a while to get the removal implement working at the right spot. But once we had it there was a new log. Not Winnie the Pooh On approaching the site we realised why the name was chosen. Spotted a likely hiding place but had a bit of delay getting into it. Eventually a stick helped get things moving.  Sherlock Holmes 1 There were plenty of nearby muggles, including one fellow a couple of properties away watching closely. We figured that it was likely he knew about the ...

Tuesday 19 March 2013 There was multiple purposes in going for a walk to Collins Cap. The bushwalk to the summit is a nice walk and of course there was the cache to collect. The third reason was to see what destruction had occurred as a result of the fire there in January and how it had effected the track work the Wellington Park Bushcare Group had done there during the last part of 2012. Ironically the fire had burnt much of the area where the track had been cleared and left the uncut section untouched. Wellington Peaks C - Cap it Off The GPS was followed up the peak branching off the actual track early then down to the spot described. There was a log entry from a muggle who indicated they discovered it by accident, but were happy to go a long with it all and record their entry as a finder. A group from Pandani bushwalking club arrived on top soon after we found the cache and while Greg and Peter were busy with the geocaching exercise, Shirley had to explain why we were off down ...

Monday 11 March 2013  An afternoon circling the Domain, starting with what we thought was a pretty smart start with the unusual "Batteries Not Included" cache. However although we thought we had things correct, it seems that was not the case as it ended in taking lots of time and frustration. The remainder of the day was successful with a mixed bag of caches. Batteries Not Included We thought all was really going well after discovering the initial container and having an item to make things work. However the GZ didn't seem right and certainly didn't fit the spot that other logs mentioned. After more searching we went on to other geocaches and as our car was parked nearby, decided to go back to the start. This time we found more combinations that seemed to give a response, but still didn't get the confirmation expected. Nevertheless we went back to what was now several potential GZs, but failed to find anything at any. We must have missed a vital clue somewhere i...

Tuesday 12 February 2013 The hint for Organ Pipes was up beside a large rock but after going to Devil of a good time! and the rocks there this was not an ordeal. Whilst up signing the log four fellows went by and they were at the seat further down the track when I got there. One of them said that I was in front of them before, so how come they got in front. So I told them about geocaching. The rock beside the track mentioned in the hint, in this case it is the view from the cache site.

Tuesday 12 February 2013 Devil of a good time! Sue had been to Devils Gulch once before and was not at all keen on going there again, so she was happy to drop me off at The Springs.    The walk was a bit more adventurous than it needed to be and at one stage I thought Barad wouldn’t be pleased with the route I chose if he had been able to come on the walk.  As I departed from The Springs two Asian girls asked if they could follow to the top of the mountain.   I told them I wasn’t going the way they would need to and thought to myself they would be in for one hell of a shock at the boulders ahead if they did go my way.  Anyway I took them to the start of the Pinnacle track and gave them some brief directions.  Snow gum trunk Ice House Track     With that I turned left and headed for the Ice House track.   A bit over an hour later (70 minutes actually, so somewhat off Reborn’s pace) I was overlooking the cache area.  I...
