Russians

The Russians are Coming II (tribute) A lovely spring day after some pretty ordinary weather. After enjoying lunch with a friend nearby Sue decided to look for this nearby cache. After circling the safety fence she entered the complex and followed the GPS which took her to GZ. Thinking to herself that it would have been handy to have Peter along today she set upon the task herself. Clambered, pulled, signed and replaced and then off to pick up her grand daughter from school.

Our Worst Geocaching Day

Monday , 7 November 2016 This walk around Dowsings Point from the Derwent Entertainment Centre ended up being our worst day of geocaching we have had. One find out of three. Divining Angle Sue said "is it under there" but Peter was a bit fed up and said "probably not" but looked anyway and there it was. The Cache With No Name We walked along the path and went down some steps, where we were confronted with a wire fence marked with no entry.  The GPS pointed to the other side of the fenced area and about 150 m within.    So we weren't too impressed  with this cache. On checking The  List after getting home it is apparent that the land vested in the defence force goes to the water line. What's the Point Somewhat frustrating when everyone else finds it easily and quickly and we can't.

Hartz Peak

Saturday , 29 October 2016 Hartz Lake Look In Here The hint got us there quickly, thanks to the accurate interpretation of it by Sue.    We replaced the log. Boys Toys and Girls Day Out Found using clues as GPS was only a general area help. Cache of Cash Nice little hiding place.  A favourite because of that. Ladies Tarn How appropriate that the cache was found by such a nice lady today. SWVIEW With so many possible hiding spots and no clue given, we were not prepared to spend much time Platypus Playground Geeveston Last time here the cache had been washed away, but with it replaced and we were passing it warranted a second visit. Sue said " let me have a look " followed by " you're as blind as a bat "

Meehan

Thursday , 27 October 2016 After collecting some garden stakes for a job at Mount Field, we looked for caches in the area, firstly getting the easier ones then on discovery the closest one that was somewhat off in the bush was not far away decided to go for that as well. Once there the next was not really that greater a distance away and so headed for that as well.. Mixed Herbs We suddenly twigged on why the cache was so named whilst standing writing the log. Meehan 17 Took a while to get there from Meehan 17 Meehan 18 Headed overland and down side of gully from "Mixed Herbs" The Curse of the FTF (Tasmania) #1 Didn’t actually take long to find and the TB was not there.

Huon Visit

Wednesday , 21 September 2016 We had reason to visit the Huon, on what started as cloudy as forecast but eventually ended up sunny and quite warm; we were overdressed for the conditions. After getting the final cache on our list at Franklin, we passed the multifaceted post office cum coffee shop where all was quiet when we stepped inside., but within a few minutes the very obliging woman running it was swamped with customers whilst she made our coffee.  But they all seemed happy to wait and chat to each other.. Tricky Landing Sue said what about that and it was. It nearly beat us as our thought was a bison tube would be hanging.  Quite clever. Franklin Caravan Looked for a while before giving up. Mary MacKillop - Geeveston Sue located this one. Platypus Playground Geeveston Others might have found this easily, but we didn’t. Room with a View GPS said 10m or so over the fence from the big tree, but Sue spotted it where we were standing. Mellifluous

Foothills at Tolosa

Image
We went for a circuit walk, partly to check on a sensor camera in the area, and took the opportunity to get a couple of caches along the way. Epcaris virgata   a threatened species that grows in the area If You Hide It, They Will Come Sue said there it is, you probably wont be able to see it as you're colour blind. Merton, Wellington Park Post Haste Easy enough to spot so long as on the right side of the fence.

Around the Flinders Ranges

Monday , 15 August 2016 Darknstormy's Slice Of Heaven Just couldn’t open this green tube, wasn't strong enough. Uloudra Found whilst doing  the Caves circuit walk timed to finish for sunset views of Rawnsley Bluff and Chace Range. Clem Squared Corner A very nifty hide, first time that we have seen one hidden like this. Beds are burning Thought it would be in this sort of spot, but it took a few minutes to locate all the same. Rawnsley Park Station Kept looking at the main object that seemed the most likely spot and about to give up when Sue looked elsewhere. Rawnsley Bluff Raven's Nest Fortunately Sue looked at her GPS before we had walked past on the way to the top of the hill, where we assumed it would be. Place called Vertigo Had a look but thought the effort of getting down the chute was not worth bothering with. Wilpena Views Peter went through the scrub so Sue had no trouble getting there first. Near Camp found on ground under bi

Waverley in the Sun

Sunday , 17 July 2016 It was a nice sunny and calm winter day and a good opportunity for a stroll at Waverley Flora Park.  We suddenly remembered there were some new geocaches there since our last visit, so a quick scan and a download to the GPS's and we were off. Discovered a new track whilst there as well. 12 You CAN Find this (Ver. 2.0), Waverley Walk Took a very steep climb off a lower track circling well down from the top and never met a soul during the walk until arriving at the cache site.  Two people walking with dogs suddenly appeared coming from both directions.  Again a very nifty cache design. 3 Lynched byson, Waverley Walk Didn't find at the first couple of spots but eventually got there. Xtra cache , Waverley Walk Bonus Walked on the new track before discovering we would have to go cross country 30 metres.  Whata nice design for a geocache container. Sommers and Flinders Bays

Tuesday , 28 June 2016 A Monumental Expedition We could remember getting a cache here before and discovered this was a replacement. We thought we would have a coffee at the café but it was closed on a Tuesday. Conical chronicle Noticed a track to the shore but then found this was not the ideal way at all but once a better approach pad was found it was much easier.  Left a TB. First time we have seen one of this type of container which was nice and dry inside so must seal up well. Vee to me Spotted location, but was busy looking for State Permanent Marker and didn’t check it at first. Although the cache was found the marker wasn’t. Somflin #1 Easy enough to find as was expected for this first one of the series. Somflin #2 Did not tax us too much as it did not require any calculations. Somflin #3 Calculation was fairly straight forward and it didn’t take long. Somflin #4 Bit of scrub, which may well have grown up since cache was placed, so it took a bit of

West Coast to Corinna

Wednesday , 25 May 2016 The Great Divide The surroundings were rather damp as Peter hugged the platform to retrieve the cache. Signed the log, dropped the cache returning it to hidey hole, found it again and replaced Lord Nelson Looked although GPS had trouble, but even with the hint we couldn’t locate it.  The falls were good though with lots of water flowing. QUEENSTOWN'S 99 Bends An easy find at our lunch spot overlooking the town. Fatman South Found by Sue as we waited for the barge. GPS was jumping about a bit before eventually settling. Fatman North An easy but well-hidden cache. Whyte River 1 Sue said that log looks slippery but Peter ventured over safely. Whyte River 2 Had a quick look but as there were several recent DNF we didn’t look for long.    Whyte River 3 Sue spotted the likely spot and had the cache in hand quickly. The log was pretty damp and we plugged the gap so as to not replace the cache too far for the next cacher to r

Highlands Bushwalking Trip

Image
Tuesday , 12 April 2016 We were making the most of a good weather forecast and  going to spend a few days bushwalking near Lake StClair and collected a few caches on the journey there and back. Shadow Lake and Mount Rufus Rufus Mt ST650 Did the circuit walk from Shadow Lake; a fabulous walk in lovely weather. Tassies Belly Button Trig Point (ISA Monument Bronte) ST715 With GC cache close by it seemed a good idea to do this monumnet. Bellevue Tier MWT ST711MWT As there was a GC cache here we decided that we might as well get this trig as well. Bronte Lagoon Area ST543 Collected on way from Bronte village. Lawrenny We found this cache on our way to Lake St Clair area for a couple of days. Although we have driven this road many times we have never noticed this grand old house, Lawrenny. TFTC ausandaus2 'Knock knock' - 'Ouse there' On our way to Lake St Clair for a couple of days, unfortunately had no luck finding this cache. Checked out a f

Long Marsh Dam

Image
long marsh Whilst on a walk to the Long Marsh Dam site we didn’t miss the opportunity, along with barad Bunch, to find the cache.  It is a most interesting spot and the bush is pleasant and had huge spreads of Hibbertia procumbens a yellow flowering plant that literally covered the ground; in fact, we have never seen it so prolific or dominant. The most direct route is Honeysuckle Road from Ross, a distance of about 44k.  The road leaves the Tooms Lake Road about 18k from Ross and is initially a low standard but not overly rough gravel road for a large part of the distance, but does become rougher over the last third of the way. The former bridge over the Macquarie River no longer exists and ends at a rock barrier just prior to the river. A track leaves the road at the bottom of a dip a few hundred metres before the barrier (at S42° 08.8216 E147° 49.5031) and this gives an easy walk to the ruins of former settlement for the construction workers. The dam site can also be visited f

Some Midlands Backroads

Monday , 14 March 2016 ET Phone Home Peter put in a suggestion and Sue found it worked and went on to complete an arduous deciphering. We could not work out all of the hint though, but fortunately didn’t need to. Richmond Gaol geocache The hint homed us right to the spot. The Wedding Cache Muggles abounded so we just had to go calmly and we don’t think any really noticed as the ducks took precedence. Coal River Gorge Gorgeous Gorge Parked near the last house after attempting to ask some people in the previous dwelling if it was OK to go through.  They were spotted talking and so Peter walked down towards them but suddenly they were gone and it was all silence, even a yell  of "hello are you there" did not elicit reply. After leaving the car we went down an old vehicle track and spotted the hint, even if now fading.  Quite spectacular gorge which we had walked through part of it in mid 2005. Down to South Arm

Image
Thursday , 21 January 2016 It had been several months since we had been out for a day caching and we chose South Arm as the venue. Peter thought to view the Australian geocaching site and this added a few extras to look for. With the Australian caches, for some reason the option to download the cache data to the Garmin GPS no longer works, but even when downloading the GPX file, and copying to the GPS, it doesn’t dhow as a geocache when searching.  So the only option was to record it as a waypoint. GREAT BALLS OF ??? Stopped but when we saw the rubbish, including toilet paper, we soon lost interest. Racecourse Flats Was just too hard to open, so a photo has been added in lieu of logging. Seven ZL/R Radio Mast ST466 Stopped at a spot roughly as close as we could get to. Billy's Bluff - the views The old log  bag was very wet so we removed it and dried the container insides.  A good view from here. 2014 Amongst the Fir Trees Looked at the spot the GPS indic
