Montagu Thumbs Circuit
Tuesday 22 January 2013
The option we chose to visit some caches along the ridges and peaks overlooking the North West Bay River was by riding our bikes along the Pipeline Track then walking circuit via Wellington Falls, Montagu Thumbs and Cathedral Rock. After parking the bikes the three of us, Barad Bunch, Dave a non geocacher and Peter set off on the well-built track to the falls, after that the rough track to the old Montagu fire trail was used. The last part of this is getting overgrown by Bauera as was parts of the old fire trail. There had been some overnight rain and the bushes were quite wet to push through. It was good going along the Thumbs cathedral ridge, although parts are starting to degrade from use, then down the zig zags to North West Bay River in the rain. After crossing we then struggled up the Siphon track, which is an almost unrelenting grunt for nearly 800 metres at a 1:3 gradient. No wonder we were tired by the time we got on our bikes for the return ride to Neika.
Norris Hut
It was quite a wetting experience getting through the foliage to the hut as many wet head high bushes had to pushed past. Barad read out the description and Dave soon spotted the suspicious spot.
Montagu Thumbs
It was very fortunate that Barad was along on the walk as Peter forgot to download the cache details to his GPS. We tried the wireless transfer between GPS’s but for some reason the data failed part way through and from then on both GPS’s refused to communicate. Nevertheless we had to resort to verbal transfer of cords. If it wasn’t for Barad, Peter would have been searching fruitlessly on the big flat summit area 200 metres to the west of the actual cache hide.

It was raining by the time we reached Cathedral and as Barad had already found this one he waited while peter went up the last few metres to search. However as Peter went to the wrong side of the location, Barad gave some advice, perhaps to hasten our departure, and the cache box was soon out. Care had to be taken to protect the contents from the rain and Peter managed to drop a couple of items from box which was crammed full; one of these was a trackable so that didn’t go back in.,
