Seven Mile Sojourn
Saturday, 13 July 2013
It was a most pleasant day with lots of sun out Seven Mile way and we did a circuit from the south east corner to the end of the airport and back through pine plantations. Originally it was thought that the caches at Five Mile Beach might be included, but once back at the car we decided we had expended enough energy already for the day.
Went too far along the coast as it would have been a slippery ascend if we followed the GPS, so had to backtrack about 20 metres to pick up a pad. The cache was found at the spot the GPS indicated. On return we ascended a bit further and used the fairly newly gravelled walking track back to the beach. This was our 450th cache, excluding the Aust site ones. Found the log on the ground beside a cut down pine, but no sign of the container. We didn’t have a spare one but put the log in a plastic bag and placed it under a quite large log chip beside the stump. A bit of searching went on then we returned to our first spot and Sue, with the help of a stick, revealed the cache. After emerging from the pines after a couple of the Fir Trees series we walked along the road then a track beside the golf club until a junction with a narrow track. Shortly down this we started searching, then with the description and hint carefully considered, soon revealed the container. Did a direct line from 2006 Fir until a track was met then when getting close again had to weave to this spot. Once there it was fairly quick to find. We had lunch ion the top of a dune opposite the pine plantation and debated which would be best approach. The edge seemed to be quite thick with young and old pines, but then a gap looked OK and once through we discovered it was quite open going under the canopy. The GPS eventually brought us to a spot with a bit of tinsel and we knew it had led us well. The geocoin recorded as here wasn't found. On getting close, as we walked along beside the road, a spot matching the hint was seen and as we have previously found hides of this nature it made for the quickest find for the day. Soon after leaving for our return walk we heard a roar and stood and marvelled at the site of a passenger jet taking off. Whilst having lunch it bit further along we watched two more take off and swoop up close above.
