Calverts Lagoon Area

Thursday, 10 October 2013

As we haven't been beyond Sandford for several years when three new caches were placed near Calverts Lagoon we decided it was time to head that way. There was also two close by ones and they were added to the list.

Mareniko's Menagerie

A fellow was in the paddock of Mareniko and had a look as we pulled and walked to the cache, then he resumed what he was doing; we assume he also knew what we were up to.

Calvets Walking Track

Sue managed to find this OK, but had to stretch until she realised it was an easy grab from the other side. After that we went for a walk along the track where the first bit had some nice flowers out. The part going close to the fence wasn't nearly as pleasant so we came back via the walking only track closer to the lagoon. Unfortunately Erica, the weed species, has invaded some of the area and although signs indicate horses must be kept to the track marked for them, there was evidence of horse hooves in the off limits areas. One problem arose of finding the other end of the walking track and we came one very wet section and decided to find a dry way back which fortunately was not too hard to find.

Calvets Beach

We walked along the road from Calverts Walking Track  and saw that there was one car parked with the driver just hopping back in. He started to reverse but stopped, so we were unsure what our next step would be. It seemed the best option was to walk up the track to the beach where we discovered why the driver was waiting with the engine running. A woman was sitting on the track taking photos of her dog and our arrival curtailed that and she walked to the car and our path to the cache was now clear. A chainsaw carrying man was seen in the container and we decided to take it to turn into a travel bug.

Calvets Lagoon

Quite a quick find with no one about

Billy's Beach

As we walked onto the beach there was a young woman in bikinis sunbathing and Sue said it is just as well she was with me because wandering about the area looking for a cache might look like I was just there to perve. We walked to a suspect spot that had a feature mentioned in the hint only to discover the GPS said we still had a number of metres to go. Around a small cliff we went to discover the real object and then we wondered how we could get there without arousing suspicion. However sunbaking woman wasn't looking our way so Peter scrambled to get the container and bring it back to where Sue was waiting. At this stage a bloke arrived from along the beach and sat with the woman but facing us, so replacing was going to be tricky. We just had to go for it and Peter replaced it hoping that they thought we were studying some feature. We think we got away with it and anyway the couple left the beach before we did.
