West Nelson

Thursday 20 September 2012

A batch of caches was noted in the bush surrounding the college on Mount Nelson. We plotted a circuit walk, well mostly as there was one bit of retracing steps. In all it was a decent afternoons walk totalling some 6.5 kilometres.

Fused

An interesting cache and we knew we were in the right spot because there were two stickers on the ground with Jules Direen printed on them. Eventually the container was spotted, just had to be looking in right direction from the correct angle.

Lean on me

We could see the location from the cache name and the hint as we got closer and it didn't take long to find it. Left Travel Bug Artie Ziff

Water Main

Followed the wide track until reaching a rougher track down to where we could see a post that signalled the GZ, which was confirmed by the GPS.

Mad Max

After walking back from the "Water Main" cache the wide track brought us right to the spot. The car body which was mentioned in some logs was clearly visible was more confirmation. The new and larger container was soon found.Philotheca verrucosa formery known as Eriostemon

One of highlights of the area was the proliferation of Philotheca verrucosa formerly known as Eriostemon together with some bright Tetrathecas

Advantage Lochie

This was easy to find and marked our 200th GC cache

Ready to join the fight

The clues reduced the search time. We noted all the work done by locals to clear what was once impenetrable Gorse, there is plenty more to go though.

another bridge

After failing to find this a few days earlier we looked on the correct side and when Peter hopped the railing he quickly spotted the hide.

Tickets

This was an interesting exercise. We followed the instructions but not for long enough. Instead of turning left we went straight ahead walking along the outside fence to the end then turned left at the corner and followed the fence until the GPS started pointing away. By good fortune there were steps with a hand rail to take us down to a gravel road where the cache location could be seen. The base of the container has a small crack but so far no water has entered. Our return was by the route that we should have followed which was also mostly out of sight of the soccer players; not that any seemed to take any notice of our perambulations anyway.
