Christmas at Swansea

This year our family all stopped at a holiday house not far out of Swansea for Christmas.

This gave us the opportunity do look for a few caches in the region.

Bagot Point

Lots of holidaying muggles, vehicles and boats. Could see signs of previous gecoachers entering site.

Look at the Sea

We were a little surprised when the GPS told us to pull up here. The grass was quite long but we got through to the cache. The log was very wet and the pages stuck together; the previous visitor had left behind a sheet of paper in a plastic bag so we signed that one.

Once was a Dump

We came down a side street and realised going any further that way would be a bit tricky so walked along a south heading track before getting to the shore. A few ups and downs brought us to GZ and return was north along the coast which proved easier walking. Left Orb Weaver Geocoin.

Sneaky Sneak 2

Found by Sue after consulting the hint. As we were signing the logs two friends came past and we had a chat to them, but they didn’t seem to notice the little container we were holding.

Freycinet Views

If we had been a bit more diligent in reading the logs we might have discovered the optimum way to this cache. Peter found the worst possible way up, although it did start off looking promising. He found his way barred by a thicket of prickly shrubs, but eventually got through. Sue after giving up waiting for him decided to try a route not quite as bad and both of us at least managed to see the much easier way for the return. Took a blue butterfly as a memento which will be turned into a travel bug.

Spiky

A vehicle was at the bridge site but it looked like the people were about to leave, however before they did another vehicle pulled in full of Asian visitors. Fortunately all they really wanted to do was take a photo of themselves beside the Spiky Bridge and they were back in the car and away, leaving the area free for our search. The cache was still easily spotted and we hid it a bit more.

PUMPWELL

Once at GZ we were confronted with a GPS pointing in to a vigorously growing coastal wattle. Sue fought her way in and found the container. It won't be too long before it is even further to venture in.

We can imagine why this area would have been favoured by the aboriginal inhabitants. Lots of Shearwater burrows here as well to add to the appeal, now and then.

Can paddocks appear?

Stopped at the last gate and walked to GZ. Could see Little Christmas Island a bit closer from here where some friends worked on clearing the Boxthorn during the year.

Off to the Thumbs

Wednesday 27 June 2012 Well the weather was just ideal for a bushwalk to the Three Thumbs and to collect a few geocaches during the trip. However, the geocaching part looked a bit shaky as Peter’s GPS did not display any in the area. A later check at home showed the records were on the GPS and when overwritten with a new copy they displayed OK; puzzling! All was not lost because Barad Bunch had notes on the caches and the grid on his GPS. This enabled us to locate the one near the cars. After morning tea at the lookout over Maria Island we commenced the walk to the Three Thumbs. Shady spots had plenty of frost but a fair bit of the way was along the tops of the main ridge and in the sun. Eventually we w ere on the highest peak, presumably the third Thumb and also what we presumed would be the hiding placed of the “ Three Thumbs Up ” geocache. Frogs and Water

We knew that " Swimming Hole " was a cache not far from home and finally decided to seek it. Earlier in the week we had picked up " Spot the Frog ", a moveable cache found under the Geocache Australia website and needed to deposit the little fellow somewhere. As frogs like water and this one had spent a few months on a dry hillside it seemed appropriate to lodge near a creek, so finding "Swimming Hole" was combined with the task. We could work out the starting spot even without a GPS and soon had the next stage entered in the GPS. Much to Peter's surprise it led us back down rather than up the creek and we ended beside a fence. A bit of searching and head scratching saw us give up for now and head off to lodge our little froggy. On return home Sue scanned through past logs and discovered several people also ended up where we did and then found this was several metres out. Freycinet Bushwalk

3 – 5 October 2012 As we were going on a bushwalk to Freycinet Peninsula the potential geocache finds in the area were checked and several were close to our route. We went for three days, camping at Cooks Beach for both nights and heading down to a rocky peak beyond Passage Beach. Graham (Graham51) was with us although he took the longer return option over Mount Graham where he also managed to locate a cache on his journey. On the way back in the car we picked up a couple in the region. Top of the Pass Our first for the day, located by Graham, and although a few muggles were about none took much notice of us,   Half empty or half full ? We dropped our packs and with two people holding GPS’s and three heading to GZ it was surprising how little attention the muggles paid to our activity.
