North East Geocaching
4- 7 December 2013
We went on a mini holiday, staying at a shack at Binalong Bay then drove through the northeast to Launceston, collecting a few caches on the way. Our final day was at the Tamar Wetlands where the extensive mudflats were a new experience for us. The grass was quite high so we opted to circuit to GZ on the rocks. The grass was wet after the rain and our shoes absorbed some, but the cache was not hard to locate. Left Princess TB and took two geocoins We had a look here although the bushes were very wet, but could not find the cache. Even from Jeanerette Beach we could see a distinct feature that we reckoned would be what had to be described to claim the cache. On reaching the actual cache site our assumption proved correct. It was high tide and anyone in the pool today would easily get swept out; we kept a big distance away. The eyesight read the word "rear" instead of "near" so we were a bit astray until rechecking the hint. Another part of clue then allowed us to hone in to the exact spot. Before searching for this we met a fellow worried that his son had been away taking photos far too long. The fellow was not all that mobile, so we went to check and fortunately the son was making his way back. For us it was then off to find the cache, which was not hard to locate. The hint object even had a wobble. Stopped beside highway without realizing that there was a car park off the side road ahead. When the GPS pointed to a direction we were not happy about we tried another approach and discovered the lookout. It took a little searching until the right hiding spot was located. Several bits of toilet paper plus freshly growing Blackberry were both off putting factors. Did the short circuit walk and Sue discovered the cache at the first spot she searched. A quiet part of the park and a quick find. The solar compactor rubbish bin was a first for us. Didn’t take long to find, but a muggle was having a good look while the log book was being signed. The cache went back while she was looking elsewhere. We assumed this would be on the Zig Zag track above Cataract Gorge but that didn’t get us close enough. While walking along the Zig Zag track the GPS told us the cache was always some way off in the scrub. Eventually a rough track of sorts was noticed and was followed, but it was very strange because it became faint and pretty much non-existent, but the GPS kept encouraging us to continue. Then we reached a substantial track once at GZ. At least the return walk was OK. Afterwards we realised that if we had fully read the description we would have discovered the correct track in. It did take a while to locate the cache as stated covering of the container had changed to casuarina leaves. We have reinstated the original covering. A lot of muggles but even so we did make a reasonable search without success. A quick find and the area was free of muggles. Found via the hint. Found at the anticipated hiding location. We had a good check about for this but it was not looking like success would be had, until Peter noticed the container lying on the ground not far from the trunk of the tree. The container was placed back where we assumed it would have come from. Location found without trouble.
