Geocaching

Friday , 26 January 2018 The day wasn’t too warm making it pleasant to walk up the Hobart Rivulet track, but of the 4 caches passed we only scored 50%. Bubbling Brook Went on wrong side of the rivulet at first. Hobart Rivulet Park 2 Spent as longas prepared to allot (which isn't all that long). The Grotto GPS gave conflicting readings, so gave up after a short search. A Leafy Experience Managed to locate quickly.

The Russians are Coming II (tribute) A lovely spring day after some pretty ordinary weather. After enjoying lunch with a friend nearby Sue decided to look for this nearby cache. After circling the safety fence she entered the complex and followed the GPS which took her to GZ. Thinking to herself that it would have been handy to have Peter along today she set upon the task herself. Clambered, pulled, signed and replaced and then off to pick up her grand daughter from school.

Friday , 4 September 2015 The idea we had was to walk up the Cascade track to make a further search for the Barad Tricky tree cache and then cut over the ridge to Marlin Road and find if there was a way down to the Birthday cache near Strickland Avenue. We discovered there wasn’t and did a circuit up to the road junctions and then down Strickland to the car outside the brewery. Tricky Tree 06 After a bit of an oblique hint from Barad and somewhat more detail from another geocacher, we had a pretty good idea what to cast our eyes upon.  It was a more elaborate construction, than expected though, that we encountered.  A favourite point deserved for this. Birthday Cache On entering the park and seeing the way out signs erected by council, we were confident that once over the nicely built bridge the track would continue down the rivulet and exit back onto Strickland Avenue.  But after a very short distance a fence and go no further sign brought us to halt.

Tuesday , 27 January 2015 Parked in Marieville Esplanade and walked along some of the streets of this part of Sandy Bay and battery point to Salamanca Place and back via Princes Park.  The weather forecast was fine for the morning with showers likely in the afternoon and it was spot on, with precipitation starting about 100 metres before we got to the car. By the Derwent Parked nearby and walked to Battery Point checking this on the way, but a muggle sitting near.  Still mothers and kids close on return, but had a quick look while doing up shoelaces. Geo-Anonymous This was most amusing.  Plenty of people were sitting about as we had a quick scan. Without noticing anything likely.   After sitting down ourselves and waiting for  the GPS to get more satellites, it pointed to a spot that was free of people.  Peter mentioned the name of the cache and wondered what significance it might have.  In the meantime Sue said the name and pointed to which ...

Wednesday , 16 April 2014 It was a delightful autumn day and we decided on an afternoon walk from North Hobart to the Domain and down to the Bahai Centre and back to North Hobart, taking in three caches on the way. Bahai Architecture Walked here from Domain and noticed it wasn't the most pedestrian friendly way. No muggles on foot at the time of finding. My bad Bonsai A quarantine container was noticed and thought it might be a trick one, but of course it was the real thing. Cache eventually found in a nice hide. The Mural Laneway We once owned a container a bit like this, but it went missing. It was a quiet time when we looked and took the cache to a seat to write the log. Unfortunately a muggle decided to sit at the opposite bench, so replacing had to be a bit stealthy. There were a few things that were not as they seem, but it was not until we returned the cache that discovered the others.

Friday , 21 February 2014 The caches along the near the bike track between Cornelian Bay and the Botanical gardens had been in for over a month, but despite not living all that far away we hadn't got around to looking until today. Lots of bikes whizzing past during the time we were on the track and the return we switched the walking track which now has an entry point at the eastern end. In all a bit over 3k round trip. HBT Branching Out We had a fairly good idea what to look for but it still took a time to locate. The GPS was pointing to a different object but when Sue moved north she soon spotted it. HBT Bridge to Nowhere Sue looked at the web and said this was disabled, but when Peter looked a few minutes later it had just been enabled; a bit of luck there. However we spent a bit of time looking whilst cyclists sped past. Peter looked at one spot and missed it but Sue had a closer look and found the container she suspected it to be. Thursday , 21 November 2013 Originally we were going to walk elsewhere but the weather forecast persuaded us that a circuit of Mount Direction, Madmans Hill and Gunners Quoin would allow is to cut the day short when and if the predicted rain arrived. After the climb to Direction, where mist was rolling in, it was down to an open plateau that was followed north to Madmans Hill. At this point it looked like conditions would deteriorate, from the occasional drizzle we were experiencing, and the walk was changed to return via Saggy Flats.     Kids cubby spotted on the way We were back at the cars at 2:40 pm and were just driving off when the rain arrived. Mount Direction had been subjected to a burn off several months ago, but it looked to us that the fire was too intense, with lots of old trees having been so badly effected that they had fallen over. 23/04/2013  We had been contemplating going on a bike ride from New Town into the city to collect the HBT series and today was it. It was school holidays and also close to lunch time, so the bike track has a lot of muggles, including council and services maintenance workers. HBT Under the Bridge A cyclist stopped to ask what we doing, and was told the answer; well what else can you say? HBT Wall Spent a lot of time looking whilst heading to town and even looked at objects that were eventually found to match the hiding cover. What threw us was the supposed 'give away' sign, because we saw what could be it and searched there, then gave up and continued on our way. However on the return ride we spotted what at first looked to be the sign, then perhaps wasn't as it was so faint. But it was and then the remainder of the hint items were revealed. Thursday  4 April 2013  We had planned to go for a walk on the mountain, but delays forced a rethink and a walk around Hobart past a few caches was the outcome. Not unexpectedly, muggles were everywhere. AC/DC: Who made who We discovered the likely hiding spot which matched the hint, but a search did not locate the container. Even stretching in as far the Peter's arm would allow failed to come up with anything. Ghost Tour of Hobart #4 Penitentiary Chapel As luck would have it a tour was just taking place right at the GZ, so we had to wait about looking at the historic features. There was also building works going on a few metres away in the emergency services building. Hobart Rivulet : Do Not Enter This took a lot of searching. We discovered the spot matching a recent log entry, but didn't spy the container. Monday 11 March 2013  An afternoon circling the Domain, starting with what we thought was a pretty smart start with the unusual "Batteries Not Included" cache. However although we thought we had things correct, it seems that was not the case as it ended in taking lots of time and frustration. The remainder of the day was successful with a mixed bag of caches. Batteries Not Included We thought all was really going well after discovering the initial container and having an item to make things work. However the GZ didn't seem right and certainly didn't fit the spot that other logs mentioned. After more searching we went on to other geocaches and as our car was parked nearby, decided to go back to the start. This time we found more combinations that seemed to give a response, but still didn't get the confirmation expected. Saturday 26 January 2013 We were going to the Salamanca Market and decoded to look for a few caches in the area. After parking in battery point our path took us through Princess Park and we made a diversion to St Davids Park and also around the waterfront. This route brought us to close to several caches.   Nelson's signal Worked out stage one for this on way. Remainder will have to wait another day when we are in the second stage area. Antarctica TB Transit Lounge This was reached with very few people nearby, despite it being market day. Sue had the container spotted as a little bit was visible. Although lots of travel bugs were listed they had all gone. We left a car trackable and covered the container well.   Hobart City - Scratchie exchange On reaching the top end of the market we branched off to look for this and the GPS took us to what looked the likely spot going on the hint.
